Hello.

I hear that absence makes the heart grow fonder, but I have been here longer than most. I miss my significant other every day. What can I do to feel less like I'm missing an arm or a leg?

I cannot offer you a complete solution as the fonder the heart, the greater the yearning. I myself know this pain well. Have you tried talking to your significant other as one might in spiritual contemplation? Although they are not here, it can help to ease our loneliness to imagine they might hear and feel us.

I did when I first arrived. When I first learned of Valentines day we spent a day together. I was afraid of seeming mad, though, so I ended it after a few months.

When you were talking to them, did you feel less lonely? After you talked to them, did you feel better for a while? If so, then it's not crazy at all. In fact, it's a healthy way to deal with missing someone.

I write letters and poems to those I miss, too, so that I will remember all that I want to tell them should they ever come here or if I go home.

I was mostly overcome with accepting the fact that I was going to be here for quite some time.

Writing letters is an idea! I could make a book.

Then it is worthwhile to continue.

This place is extraordinarily overwhelming when you realise there's no set time for our dwelling here.

A book is a great idea. I keep one with my significant other here, and I originally wrote my letters in the notebook I received when I got here. Of course, I ran out of room pretty quickly. I've just been keeping them like a journal in additional notebooks since.

I have a few things written down, but nothing like what you're describing. And perhaps if she does show up and something happens to me, she won't be lonely like I am.

It's also nice to hear that talking to someone who isn't there isn't too strange. I don't mind being strange but that's a kind of strange I was unsure about.

You're very welcome. Sometimes what we need is to know that other people understand us, and I definitely understand the need to feel like you can communicate with those you love even in their absence. I find it soothing in a way nothing else I've tried.

Yes. Loneliness can do strange things to the mind, though, so you might feel like they're responding on occasion. Just make sure they don't start giving you commentary unprompted and you're fine.
