I believe that if he cares for you and truly wants you to be able to be yourself, then it is possible for the two of you to equals to each other. Since he wants you to remain near, I would guess that he cares for you sincerely. Three months is not that long of a time; a relationship that has been one way for an entire lifetime does not change quickly, nor should it. I suggest you take your time to get to know him anew as you are getting to know yourself.

This may be outside your area of expertise, but how do you suggest getting to know yourself?

Spend time with yourself. Take some time each day for an extended period of time to do something that you enjoy. It should be an activity that you have primarily positive experiences with and that is something you would engage in solo back in your own world. For me, this sort of activity is associated with fine arts. I like to paint and write poetry. Sometimes I sew just to see what happens when I put certain types of fabric together. Spend an hour doing the activity you enjoy, and use that time to reflect on whatever thoughts come to mind. You might find it dull in the beginning, but a lot of getting to know oneself is giving yourself time to simply be.
